Context: My makeshift compost bin made from 1/4" construction wire and 4 stakes was functional, but somewhat of a pain to access and turn the compost. A neighbor had donated some scrap lumber, including a number of 1x's and a few 2x's, and so I took measurements and drew up some plans to use all the scraps and create a new and aesthetically pleasing compost bin. |
Idea: The 2x's were used as the framing members at the corners of the bin. I cut the bottoms so the stakes could be driven into the ground. The 1x's were used as horizontal slats anchored at either end to a 2x member. I re-used the construction wire from the previous bin and stapled this to the slats so it was sandwiched between the slats and the 2x's. The back, (2) sides, and center panels were driven into the ground and then screwed together at the ends. The front panel is removable, and has a hook at the top edge of each side that latches into the eyes in the side panel to keep it secured. Eventually I will build a top cover with triangular framing supports to mitigate drainage. |
